Matkalla mukana Heikki S, Mika, Pekka,
Heikki R ja Jaska. Matkalle piti myös lähteä Jyskyjärveltä kotoisin oleva työkaverini Paavo, vaan eipä päässyt työesteiden vuoksi mukaan.
Reissun
idea lähti liikkeelle joskus vuosia sitten jutustelusta Paavon kanssa Bemari mainoksesta jossa
ajetaan puista kävelysiltaa pitkin ja Paavohan kertoi olevansa kotoisin tästä
nimenomaisesta paikasta, eli sinnehän piti päästä!
Juttelin
Matkan
ajankohdaksi valikoitui elokuun alku. Näin jälkeenpäin ajatellen ratkaisu oli
paras mahdollinen säiden suhteen, vaikka kesän sateet olivat syöneet teitä ja
nostaneet vedenpintaa sen
verran että reittiä jouduttiin hieman rukkaamaan.
Lauantai aamuna valmiina reissuun |
Liikkeelle
grillaten. Sovittiin lauantain ajoreitti ja tapaamisaika Heikki R:n
kanssa Joensuussa missä hän liittyi porukkaan .
Mikkelistä ajoimme yhtä Suomen parhaita mutkateitä
Puumalan kautta Savonlinnaan, torilla syötiin lörtsyt ja matka jatkui Savonrannan
kautta valtateitä vältellen Joensuun torille.
.
Puruveden muikkuja syömässä Joensuun torilla. |
Kalustona
meillä oli:
Heikki
S BMW GS 650,
Mika BMW GS 1200 Adventure,
Pekka Honda 750 Africa Twin,
Heikki R Triumph 1050 Tiger ja
Jaska
Suzuki 650 V-Strom.
Emme
No me jätettiin karhut rauhaan ja
karhut meidät,
oli
niitä kuvauskojuilla yön aikana ollut, kuten
aamupalalla kuulimme.
Sunnuntaiaamuna
papereiden ansiosta sutjakkaasti lukuun ottamatta minun flunssalääkkeitäni
joista piti tehdä erillinen deklaraatio. Sinänsä mielenkiintoinen yksityiskohta
sillä samat lääkkeet ovat kulkeneet mukanani Venäjällä jo kymmeniä kertoja
ilman sen suurempia rutinoita...
Kostamukseen
muttereita.
Jyskyjärvelle
päästiin ja heti ensimmäiseksi törmättiin bussilliseen Suomalaisia, tulossa
jostain ja menossa johonkin… No, hetken aikaa turistuamme ajoimme Serkku Paavon
perässä sillalle huomataksemme, ettei meidän vesistökokemuksellamme ollut
mitään asiaa jatkaa eteenpäin. Eipä kyllä Paavo lähtenyt Ladallakaan eteenpäin
vaikka kehuikin autoa sopivammaksi paikallisille teille.
Ei
kun täyskäännös ja etsimään pyörille sopivaa säilytyspaikkaa.
Paikka
varten.
Matka
jatkui uuden Jyskyjärven ohi kohti Kalevalaa, ent. Uhtuaa
Soratietä,
soita ja korpimaisemaa riitti mukavasti kunnes päästiin päällystetylle Kalevala
– Kemi
Kalevalassa tankattiin, ihmeteltiin vanhoja puutaloja
Mikon taloon. Mikon vaimo keitti kahvit ja juteltiin niitä näitä. Mikko on
Mikon pihassa oleva Ristikivi |
Mikko
fasistista länttä, muutoin sodan jäljet on aika hävittänyt. Suomalaisten muistomerkkiä
emme ohjeista huolimatta löytäneet.
Palasimme
Mikon pihaan, pyörät parkkiin ja kävellen takaisin keskustaan ohi Lönnrotin
männyn raadon ja muistotaulun.
Takaisin
neuvosto ajan kerrostaloja,
vanhoja puutaloja, Lenin patsas ja that’s it.
Majoittauduimme varsinaisen kaupungin
ulkopuolella Valkean meren rannalla sijaitsevaan retkeilyhotelliin ja ostimme liput
seuraavaksi päiväksi Solovetskin saarten laivaan.
Hyppäsimme
paikalliseen linja-autoon aikomuksenamme käydä syömässä Kemissä. Aikamme
Ruoka
todettiin maistuvaksi, vodka lämpimäksi (etikettivirhe) ja jälkiruoaksi saamamme
mansikkaleivos sopivan makeaksi.
Keskiviikko
aamuna palattiin aamupalan kera vanhaan neuvostoaikaan, jokaiselle varattu
4
maitovalasta aika kaukana tosin ja useita hylkeitäkin. Tuulisella säällä
olisimme tuskin niitä huomanneetkaan.
Solovetskissa tutustuimme uuteen eloon
heränneeseen luostariin, vankileirimuseoon ja läheiseen kylään.
Paikka
on suosittu kohde muutaman päivän patikkaretkelle tai polkupyöräilylle,
vuokraamoja on useita.
No
sotilaiden asuinalueella kuvaamaan betoniin valettua Mig hävittäjää, ihmettelin
kelpaamattomaksi.
Ainoa
”henkilöauto” jonka näimme loppupätkällä oli Niva.
Jouduimme
lopulta harjoittelemaan onnistuneesti vesistön ylitystäkin ennen kuin pääsimme
takaisin valtatielle.
Matkalla
totesimme Heikki S:n toisen sivulaukun olevan irti ja teimme pikakorjauksen
nippusiteellä ja rautalangalla.
Petroskoin
lähestyessä liikenne vilkastui ja alkoi saada kaupunkimaisia piirteitä, tullaan
kiinni takarenkaaseen ja ohitellaan molemmilta puolilta. Tarkkana olla pitää.
Petroskoissa
majoituimme hotelli Pohjolaan joka eräistä netissä olevista tiedoista poiketen
on toiminnassa vaikkakin remontti jatkuu.
Petroskoi
Perjantaina
aamu alkoi pulttien metsästyksellä Heikki S:n sivulaukun kiinnitykseen ja
löytyihän sellaisia paikallisen korjaamon ”miljoonalaatikosta”. Pihalla tehty
korjaus kesti hyvin Suomeen saakka. Päätieltä pääsimme pois Prääsän kohdalla ja
jatkoimme matkaa Sortavalaa kohti.
Todella
upeita ja jylhiä maisemia Laatokan luoteisnurkalla ja tietysti tietöitä.
Sortavalassa
lounastimme pyörät parkkeerattuina ravintolan eteen jalkakäytävälle.
Herättivät
aikalailla kiinnostusta!
Jatkoimme matkaa kohti Käkisalmea jossa Paavo jo
odottelikin meitä.
Paavo kertoi meille Käkisalmen
historiasta.
tuli siinä vastoin tapojani muutama vodka ryyppykin otettua.
Lauantaiaamuna
starttasimme kohti Svetogorskia jonne saavuimme puolen päivän aikoihin.
En
Palautus arkeen tuli heti
passintarkastajan nuhdellessa tien reunaa pitkin ajaneita motoristeja.
Eli
matkaan kannattaa lähteä allround pyörällä, ilman nappularenkaitakin pärjää hyvin.
Toki
onhan R 1:llä joku ajanut maapallon ympärikin eli kaikki on asenteesta
kiinni.
Bensaa
oli saatavilla kohtuullisesti n. 300 km:n toimintasäteellä olevalle pyörälle.
Mikan matkassa kulkenut varabensa palasi takaisin Suomeen hyvin sekoittuneena.

Jaska
Motorbiking in Russian Karelia in beginning of August 2012
On tour Heikki S, Mika, Pekka,
Heikki R and Jaska. Also my colleague Paavo originally from village Jyskyjarvi was to participate our tour, but being too busy with his work he coudn't do it.
The idea of the tour started some years ago on a discussion with Paavo about a BMW bike advertise driving on a wooden suspension bridge. Well Paavo told me that he's from that village, so it's place must to see!
Later I talked about the matter with guys that I have met on motorbiking tours and after a couple years of thinking in last winter we decide to make it true.
Timing of the tour we decided August. Now afterwards that was the best possible choice thinking of last summer weather, even though the rains have damaged the roads and raised the lake water level so that we had to do some minor changes to our program.
We started on Friday after working hours and met at my home. Sauna and barbeque. Saturdays driving route was agreed and also the time to meet Heikki R in Joensuu.
From Mikkeli we drowe along one of the best winding road of Finland via Puumala to Savonlinna, ate on the market place a local speciality called "lortsy" and then continued driving via Savonranta to Joensuu avoiding the main highway. Our bikes were:
Heikki
S BMW GS 650,
Mika BMW GS 1200 Adventure,
Pekka Honda 750 Africa Twin,
Heikki R Triumph 1050 Tiger and
Jaska
Suzuki 650 V-Strom.
As we had no intention to camping and driving on muddy paths we did not remove side bags from bikes and not all bikes had enduro tyres.
Finally we reached Jyskyjarvi and the first thing to meet was a full bus of Finns coming from somewhere going to somewhere else... After some small talk drove behind Pavel to a bridge only to notice that with our experience it did not make sense to continue as the road was totally under water.
After Heikki R had joined us in Joensuu we continued driving the shortest way to Kuhmo, where we boght something to eat and drink for the night not to forget local specialty
"ronttonen" and continued to Wild Brown Bear. http://wbb.fi/bear/ We had sauna, some food and drink and a good sleep in cozy beds. Funny thing to find out was that guys writing an article to Moto-1 of quite similar tour had also been here and our Heikki had also been here a couple years earlier make photos of wild bears.
Well we let the bears in peace so did they for us.
There had been some bears at the photo cabins as we heard on the breakfast.
Sunday morning we drove right to border crossing station of Vartius and after showing our passports continued to Russia. Thanks to already filled papers the formalities in customs were short in spite of my medicine for flu. I had to fill a separate form about 10 pcs of pills... Quite funny as those pills had crossed the Russian border with me tens of times without any extra interess.
To Kostamus we arrived in good time and I called to Paavo's cousin Pavel.
Pavel was worried of the quality of the fuel of that fuel station where we were and recommend to use another.
We drove behind Pavel's Lada around the city wondering local way of saving the turn signal. Had some coffee and fueled the rest of our bikes.
We drove behind Pavel's Lada around the city wondering local way of saving the turn signal. Had some coffee and fueled the rest of our bikes.
We started to Jyskyjarvi, first on a bumpy asphalt road and the a gravel road that cannot be compared to any Finnish gravel road.
Short bumps and top of them really fine loose sand more than enough.
Short bumps and top of them really fine loose sand more than enough.
After a while driving started to feel good and front wheel was not shaking anymore too much.
BMW:s plastic bumper parts found out to have too weak connections so we had to remove them and also to thighten some other nuts.
Well Pavel did not want to try it with his Lada even though he claimed that it's the best car for those roads.
Only thing to do was to turn around to find a suitable place to leave our bikes.
We found it close to the bridge where some friend of Pavel was building a home having garage ready.
Bikes in to the garage in spite of the BMW's that nobody steals. They were so well binded together.
Over the wobbling bridge to the house of Pavel's sister where she was already waiting for us.
Chancing of clothes and a walk around the village, taking some photos, some shopping of beer and back over the bridge straight to sauna. After sauna we had a huge supper and no problem to get sleep.
On Monday morning we ate porridge with tea/coffee for breakfast, we thanked the landlady and walked to see our bikes. All untouched as well all other nights during our tour.
Pavel's grandson jumped on V-Strom to test it and of course to get a photo on his cell phone to be shown for class mates.
Our tour continued by New Jyskyjarvi to direction of Kalevala former Uhtua.
Our tour continued by New Jyskyjarvi to direction of Kalevala former Uhtua.
Gravel road, swamps, wilderness a lot before we entered the main road Kalevala
– Kemi.
The asphalt had been fixed during the summer after guys made their story to Moto1, but still there was enough bumps and holes to be evaded, even some pieces of logs was visible through the asphalt.
We saw the firs policeman with a radar but he had not interest to us.
During our whole tour no policeman had any interest of us.

In
Kalevala we refueled the bikes, wondered about old wooden houses with
satellite antennas for every indvidual flat and arrived to the house of
Mikko. Mikko's wife made some coffee and we had a long discussions. Mikko is a retired excavator driver who has been working also in Finland.Mikko told us about Kis-Kis hills where there were furious battles during the 2nd World War and as we had time we drove there. On top of the hill there was a cannon pointing to fascistic west, but time had vanished most of the remains of the war.
The memorial made by the Finns we did not find. We returned back to
Mikko's yard, parked our bikes and walked to the center passing the
remains of Lonnroth pine and memorial. When we returned back, the sauna was ready and after that the night continued as the previous one.
On Tuesday morning we ate porridge with tea/coffee for breakfast, packed the bikes, thanked the landlady and landlord. After driving some hundred meters I started to wonder where's my wallet as I did not feel it in my pocket. I stopped the bike, checked the side boxes, no result, back to Mikko checking under the bed, still no result. At the yard I fully emptied the boxes and there it was! Again goodbye to Mikko and drive to market store where guys waited me.
We continued to east and to White Sea, first bumpy asphalt road, then ugly gravel road and then again bumpy asphalt road, after that brand new asphalt road like tabletop and finally bumpy asphalt road until we arrived to Kemi. Not much to tell about…
Main road, soviet era block houses, old wooden houses, statue of Lenin and that’s it.
We stayed over night outside the city in a camping hotel right close to the White Sea harbour and bougth tickets for next day to boat going to Slovetsky Island.
Then we jumped in to a local bus as we wanted to go to Kemi for supper. After walking a while in the city we decided to return back to the hotel and have supper there.

Not a bad solution at all as we received to the restaurant just on time of opening, moved a couple of tables out to terrace where sun was shining and had icecold beers.
Food was tasty, vodka warm (faux pas) and dessert strawberry pie just sweet enough.
On Wednesday morning we were served Soviet era breakfast, watery porridge , two slides of bread, one slide of cheese and a slide of ham with a cup of tea. Of course you could have bought "coffee" with extra charge.
After breakfast we walked to the harbor waiting for to be able to get on board. The later ship of that morning was not crowded so we got places on deck.
As there was no wind at all we managed to sea 4 whales quite far away and several seals.
On a windy weather we propably havn't even notice them.
At Solovetsky we visited the monastery that has started a new life, museum of prison camp and the village close to monastery.
The islands are really popular place for a couple days hiking or biking, there are several bike rentals.
Well, of course we could have taken our motobikes to island on ship but taht we left for another time.

In the evening back to hotel only to find out the Soviet era was still on force, no way to get tables to terrace, no desserts as next customers were already queing to get our table.
No problem, as the small kiosk close to the hotel area gate was open.
No problem, as the small kiosk close to the hotel area gate was open.
Thursday morning we managed to agree to get breakfast earlier but not better so we started driving in a good time. On the way to highway Murmansk - St.Petersburg we stopped in military village to take photos of a fighter plane cast in concrete. To my wonder at least ewery second car parked in the yard had a flat tire.
The highway was in a much better shape than last time when I drove it, but still there is lot to do.
Along a couple of kilometres the road was made of fist sized rocks.
Along a couple of kilometres the road was made of fist sized rocks.
We turned of the highway close to city of Segezha, drove through the city, stopped for a while to see decayed pulp combinate
and continued to south all time more and more narrowing road.
Asphalt road changed to gravel road, first wide then narrow and getting almost impossible to drive with usual car. So the only car we saw on that part was a Lada Niva.
Finally we had no choice but cross some water filled parts of the road before we got back to highway.
Friday morning started by hunting screws to fixing Heikki S sidebox and we managed to find needed ones from one local car repairing garage. Fixing made on the yard was good enough to last back to Finland.
We continued the highway until Pryazha then turned on the road to Sortavala. A truly stunning and wild landscapes on the north west side of lake Ladoga and ofcourse some road repairing works ongoing.
In Sortavala we parked our bikes in front of a restaurant on the pavement. People were quite interested on them.
We continued towards Priozersk wher Paavo was already waiting for us.
He told us about the local history, Swedish era, Finnish era and Soviet era. We had a look of city center, railway station, old factory and the castle. It used to be in the middle of river Vuoksi but after reducing the water level there is only two small creeks left.
We spent the night in a local holiday village, had sauna after a couple days break.
After sauna we had the last dinner of our together and with Paavo so against my usual habits I had some drinks of vodka.
Finally we had no choice but cross some water filled parts of the road before we got back to highway.
On the way we noticed that one of the side bags of Heikki S was loose so we made temporarily fixing using metal wire and plastic cable ties.
As getting closer to Petrozavodsk the traffic picked up and started to be more similar than in cities, cars driving too close and passing from both sides. You have to be really careful continuously!
In Petrozavodsk we stayed overnight in Hotel Severnaya that was open even though some Finnish Internet pages was claiming something else, anyway part of it is under renovation.
Petrozavodsk is one of those cities in Russia where I could spend several days only if possible, but now we only walked to the lake to see that the statue of Otto
Ville Kuusinen is still there and after that to a German style restaurant for supper. I must say the service was exellent and also the food was good.

Saturday morning we headed to Svetogorsk where we arrived about noon.
I have never seen that long queue to border so just not by the book we passed the queue directly to the gate of customs area and I suddenly forgot that I can speak Russian. The reason for that was the strict attitude of the frontier guard not will to let bikers to pass, well back behind the slope about 100 meters and by help of a friendly car driver back in to middle of the queue.
Customs process took it's time and same queue would have been also on Finnish side of the border.
Passort controller welcomed us back to Finland by telling us not anymore to drive along side of the road...
I have not met this kind attitude to motor bikers anywhere before not mentioning wahat just happened on Russian side of the border. Maybe they had mutually agreed about that?
On Neste gas station of Imatra we said goodbye and started driving to home with great experiences to remember.
Conclusion:
About 2000 kilometers of which on Russia about 1400. Daily drivings from the first days 600 kilometers to 200 while driving on gravel roads.
That's fine as we had time for sightseeing and some photos.
The quality of the roads varied from awful to great, just middle of asphalt road there was 1 kilometer of gravel road and in the middle of nowhere a piece of brand new first quality asphalt.
So the best bike for these roads is an all-round bike, you can manage without enduro tires.

Of course someone has driven around the globe by R1 so everything is just a matter of attitude.
To be able to speak Russian makes living easier even though in Carelian villages you can manage by Finnish. In the cities its hard to find anyone to speak Finnish, English works better but not too good either.
Cell phone has coverage on main roads, cities and villages; on small roads you better have good tools with you.
Self locking bolts and nuts are more than worth of their price on these roads.
Fuel is not a problem for a bike with 300 km working range.
The fuel that Mika had with him returned back to Finland as well shaken!
